Our favorite French sandwich. Soft brioche or sandwich bread is served with intense Comté cheese and cooked ham, which is all perfectly rounded off by an aromatic mustard sauce. This French classic is as delicious as it is quick and easy to prepare and makes it worth adding to your repertoire! Whether you're a seasoned chef or a novice in the kitchen, this Croque Monsieur recipe will transport you to the charming streets of Paris and leave you craving for more.
Ingredients
1 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
2 Tbsp. grainy brown mustard
½ tsp. salt
Dash of freshly ground black pepper
8 brioche bread slices
½ lb. Comté cheese
8 slices cooked ham

Directions
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in the flour until well blended. Gradually stir in the milk, then bring to a boil, stirring constantly with the whisk. Add the mustard, then season the sauce with the salt and pepper; simmer over medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove the saucepan from the heat; set aside.
Preheat the oven to 450°F.
Toast the brioche slices until golden brown. Cut 4 slices from the Comté cheese, then shred the remaining cheese.
Spread 4 of the bread slices with the Mustard Sauce, then top each with 1 cheese slice and 2 ham slices. Cover with the remaining bread slices to make 4 sandwiches.
Place the sandwiches in a single layer on a baking sheet; sprinkle with the shredded cheese.
Bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
Remove the sandwiches from the oven. Top with the Egg Topping.
